I have waited years for this. All the people saying that it is impossible to outsource the legal process must be lawyers. Using the same methodologies that have allowed companies to outsource engineering, HR, and almost every other function, the same will indeed happen for legal services. You say, “Wait, the law is different in India and the US!” To this I simply reply that the law is different in every state as well, however, lawyers routinely practice law across state boundaries. But, this does not illuminate the Indian phenomenon. A bunch of Indian entrepreneurs will simply send tons of Indian students to US Law schools, where they will learn all about the legal system. Then, they will return home to practice US law while physically residing in India.

Next you say, “Wait, what about all the experience that clerkships/etc provide.” Again, I will simply show you that all the engineering graduate students have returned to India and elsewhere and seem to be doing fine. Even in the (many) cases where we KNOW these Indians couldn’t code their way out of a paper bag, management in the US holds this us as saving money and buries it’s head in the sand. Failures get put off and put off or buried for other reasons such as a reorganization.

The same will occur with the legal process, but since legal wording is so obstruce I think that due to the language issues (who hasn’t had the proverbial Indian talking on the phone about some technical support issue when it’s clear all this poor sucker can do is read from a pre-typed script – they couldn’t wipe their nose if their script didn’t tell them to do that) we will eventually begin to see legal arguments being made that are so ridiculous that even a 4th grader would end up ROTFLTAO.

Yes, indeed, this is the future of our LAW!

Him I am an advocate of 20 year practice in India in civil side. I am surfing since last 2 years on issue of ‘Legal Processing Outsourcing’ on net. A much hue and cry is there but I never met a person practically engaged in this work. All the data regarding the LPO in India appears to be fictions only. There may be few work with some big companies. I think it either relates to search about a trade mark / patent or it may be redrafting and briefing files only. Law in India and at abroad is totally different and It is not possible for an Indian advocate practicing in India to answer the question of foreign law.

With so much difference in the Indian Legal Process and the US process how do you feel that LPO will be a greatly outsourced process. I know that companies like Lexis Nexis have outsourced to India but things on the lower value chain i.e. document structuring etc only. I would be interested in listening to your views on this.
