If Doctors in the U.K. Can Be Suicide Bombers, Why Not Techies in the U.S.?

None of the eight taken into custody for the Glasgow terror attack is ethnic British. That’s not unusual — terror attacks are often carried out by foreigners.

But what is unusual is that seven of the eight are from the medical profession.

This is sure to sooner or later raise the question of the immigration of even skilled people.

How much of a controversy this will be in Britain remains to be seen, but in an election year in the U.S. there is a huge possibility that a terror action in another developed country will be taken up by American politicians as a reason to tighten the immigration rules. Foreign companies are already being questioned about their mis/use of the H1B and L1 visas, and the terror episode at Glasgow airport will only serve to turn up the heat.

A simple argument for them can be: If doctors in the U.K. can douse themselves in flames and threaten to burn an airport, why can’t they do so in the U.S.? And if doctors can become suicide bombers, why can’t the engineers and techies — the tribe of skilled workers that politicians claim are threatening local jobs, and that economists claim are contributing to a growth of the global economy.

That should be reason enough for the political lobby to push bills asking for tighter immigration laws. So will we see the immigration of skilled workers coming under more scrutiny?
