US defense specialist General Dynamics won the biggest IT services contract announced in June, a seven-year deal with NASA valued at over $642m. Under the terms of the deal, part of the Space Network Ground Segment Sustainment project, General Dynamics will provide services including replacing obsolete systems, creating a more flexible and expandable architecture, facilitating the integration of NASA's Space Communications and Navigation networks, addressing customer requirements and advances in technology, and implementing new methods and capabilities for supporting Space Network user spacecraft. As well as its deal with General Dynamics, NASA also awarded a significant contract, valued at $273m, to Barrios Technology. That deal will see Barrios, which specializes in engineering, space mission operations, systems engineering and technical assistance for the space industry, provide the International Space Station with mission integration support services. Other major contracts announced in June involving US federal government agencies included the Department of the Interior’s deal with Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies, which will see the vendor supporting the US Geological Survey Earth Resources Observation and Science Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Raytheon’s award from the US Navy, under which it will provide the development, implementation and sustainment of avionics system software products. Outside of the US public sector, and June saw a number of large IT services deals announced in Europe. Much of the activity was centered on the Nordic region, with major wins for local vendors EDB Business Partner, ErgoGroup and Tieto. EDB’s deal, valued at over $300m, was awarded by telecommunications provider Telenor, and will see the companies work together to consolidate and virtualize a new technology platform that will deliver a more flexible cost structure, as well as more efficient systems for users. ErgoGroup, meanwhile, secured a four-year contract extension from its parent company, Posten Norge (the Norwegian Postal Service), to provide application management services. Coincidentally, June also saw EDB and ErgoGroup announce plans to merge, creating a combined company with annual sales of close to $2 billion. Two of June’s 10 biggest deals were awarded by UK police forces. In the North-East of the country, Cleveland Police Authority selected French IT services provider Steria to deliver the force's control room, community justice and back-office functions through a shared service partnership, while in London, the Metropolitan Police Service extended its agreement with another French vendor, Capgemini. The project, which also includes BT and Unisys as major subcontractors, will now run until 2015. The Ten Largest IT Services Deals in June 2010
