HR practices like transparent appraisal, career management, performance-based work scheduling etc. are making workplaces in various IT and BPO companies employee-friendly and exciting. Workplace environment affects a lot on the overall health of an organization. And employers, not only big organizations but also small and mid-size businesses, are doing their best to motivate employees to churn out positive outcome.
To recognize these emerging small- and mid-sized companies that have an annual turnover of about or below $63 million, Nasscom along with Grow Talent (an HR consultancy firm) conducted a survey (See Table).
The Exciting Emerging Companies Survey Oct. ’07 reveals that though training is provided in all organizations, a sophisticated approach to the process is missing. So in order to make the training practice more effective and sophisticated, it is important for all the firms to integrate it with various other practices like career planning, growth and development, and performance appraisal. While this is a part of life for the big companies for years now, recent similar initiatives by smaller companies are a clear indication of the maturity of the Indian IT/BPO services market on the whole.
“The differentiating factors that decided the list are indicative and not exhaustive,” mentioned Kiran Karnik, President, Nasscom. So the list certainly does not undermine those big companies that are not featuring in the list like HCL which has the corporate policy of “Employee First, Customer Second” to create a unique environment where employee development and empowerment is foremost, and puts employees ahead of its customers and partners.
While such policies can help big companies like HCL, small and medium companies can hardly afford to employ such policies in a competitive and volatile market like India. “Other companies did not feature here as the set of decisive parameters were not particularly relevant to them, therefore, recognizing the fact that the dynamics of this segment (large companies) is quite different from the SMEs,” clarifies Karnik.
