| Accenture + CSC: Proved Green | |
| The latest list to hit the outsourcing community is the 2007 Green Outsourcers List by the people who brought out The Black Book of Outsourcing | |

There is a growing trend of having environment-friendly outsourcing providers — over 21 percent of public companies that outsource functions had “green policies and performance” demands to their provider’s contractual arrangements in 2007, and over 94 percent plan on adding “green” clauses in their renegotiation processes. In fact, among the first-time clients in 2007, 43 percent included green factors in their selection processes.
As services companies too begin to do their bit for sustainable development, some of them stand out in the crowd. Accenture, Accenture HR and CSC are just some of them (See Box-1). The companies in the green outsourcers list have incorporated issues like hardware energy consumption, alternative energies, waste disposal, use of recycled content products and environment-preferred products and services, use of bio-based products, energy- and water-efficient products, alternative fuel vehicles, products using renewable energy, and alternatives to hazardous or toxic chemicals as well as waste disposal into their sourcing strategies (See Box-2).
Not surprisingly, Indian and Chinese companies, which otherwise top many lists of outsourcing providers, are not part of the green list. “While many outsourcing vendors, particularly Europe- and U.S.-based vendors have already established proactive green corporate policies, there will be a flurry of activity among offshore firms from India and China to retain competitive appeal,” says Scott Wilson, Partner, Brown-Wilson Group and co-author of The Black Book of Outsourcing. “The economic development in outsourcing countries like China and India is alarming earth scientists concerned about the surge in greenhouse gas emissions.”
Now the pressure is on the service providers to strategize ways of adopting “green” initiatives and still remain competitive.
