European planemaker Airbus plans to boost outsourcing of work to more than 50% from around 20%–25% percent now, starting with the A350 model, the managing director of its U.K. unit said on Wednesday.

Iain Gray told Reuters in an interview that increased outsourcing would allow it to access technology outside Airbus as well as reduce costs and limit currency risk.

"Airbus is looking to increase the levels of work outsourced up to something to the order of 50%, and that presents opportunities," Gray said.

"Along the carbon fibre composite side there is perhaps even an increased opportunity for the Japanese industry being involved."

The A350, due to start operation in 2013, will use far more carbon fibre composites in its wings and fuselage than previous Airbus planes, handing Airbus a chance to make dramatic changes to its supply chain and manufacturing base.

Toho Tenax Co. and Toray Industries Inc. are the main suppliers of carbon fibre to Airbus for use in its A340 and A380 aircraft.

Gray said nothing has been decided on its supplier for the A350.
