General Motors (GM), a U.S.-based automaker, has signed a five-year, one billion dollars deal extension with AT&T, a Texas-headquartered telecom-services provider, to continue the development of its global IP network based on Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. This network will be capable of providing voice, data, video and other services.

At present, AT&T provides virtual private network services for GM. The new contract will make AT&T responsible for managing GM’s relationship with about 150 of its telecom service providers. The IP-based network is aimed at helping employees at GM to collaborate using a consistent set of technologies irrespective of their locations across the globe.
