National Association of Software and Services Company (Nasscom), India’s association of software and services companies, in its quest to sell India as a safe haven is creating safety awareness to retain India’s position as the top outsourcing destination.

Nasscom, acknowledging the fact that information security as the greatest challenge in the global economy has rolled out many initiatives to minimize frauds. One of those initiatives, National Skills Registry (NSR), a centralized database of employees of the Indian IT and BPO companies, is expected to minimize frauds to a larger extent. Twenty-five thousand Indian BPO employees have voluntarily registered themselves in the NSR so that the service providers and customers can verify their background checks automatically. This is the first such registry of its kind in the global IT BPO industry, and Nasscom expects majority of the Indian BPO workforce to be registered within next two years.

Nasscom also assures that India is at least as safe than most other countries when it comes to information security. In the past 18 months, according to reports by Privacy Watch groups, there has been 148 incidents of identity thefts in the U.S. alone while in the U.K., the Home Office estimates that identity thefts results in losses of over a billion Pounds. On the other hand, there has been less than 20 reported cases of information fraud in India. “There is no business which is fool proof, what we can do is to minimize risks and get the justice fast. Most of the reported fraud cases in India were solved fast and that proves that Indian security standards are safe,” says Kiran Karnik, President, Nasscom.

Nasscom is also actively working with the Indian Government to further strengthen the Indian IT act 2000 to protect the overseas customer data and for stricter punishments for the defaulter. However, Nasscom claims that the current IT laws are already “Quite Safe,” and there is no need to worry. According to the Banking Code Standards Board (BCBS), the watchdog of the U.K. banking industry, “Indian call centers and standards are amongst the best in the world.”
