FIVE THINGES TO
DO IN MONTERREY
  (FIVE1)

1

Mapimi Biosphere Reserve. Located in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Durango, a trek in the reserve could be a very different experience. With miles and miles of only cacti for company, the reserve gives an opportunity to view various ecosystems — all developed in one area. The Mapimi biosphere reserve has samples of a tropical forest, prairie grassland, desert and rivers. It is known for an unusual and mythical spot called the “Zone of Silence,” where it is believed that even radio waves do not go through.

Cumbres de Monterrey. “A trekker’s delight,” this park has mountains, cliffs and hiking paths for adventure lovers. Cumbres de Monterrey is situated in the outskirts of Monterrey and has a famous 25 m waterfall called “Horsetail falls,” — as the water from a few rivers gushes down, taking the shape of a horse’s tail.

3

Barrio Antiguo. If you wish to take a walk back in time, Barrio Antiguo could be the place for you. It is the name given to a street of old houses located along several blocks, which have been refurbished and made into present-day restobars, restaurants and museums. The houses date back to as late as the 17th century.

4

Macro Plaza. The city center is undoubtedly the center of attraction in Monterrey. The Tower of Commerce, situated in the city center, is the highest monument in Mexico. There’s a lot to do on a leisurely afternoon — stroll around the exquisitely sculpted fountains and the parks, and may be even catch up with some city theatre. In close vicinity to the Plaza are various museums, Paseo Santa Lucia — a beautiful cathedral — and Barrio Antiguo. A unique way to enjoy the city center would be on a horse-drawn carriage.

5

Acapulco. One of the most favorite holiday destinations in Latin America is Acapulco. Apart from its scenic beauty, it offers a varied nightlife — from discotheques to piano bars. There are interesting rafting/lake tours for travelers including the Papagayo River Adventure and Coyuca Lagoon Tour.
