The changing landscape – opportunities and challenges

Object-oriented and objective-oriented — this sums up Objectiva. By being object-oriented, this China-based software-development company hopes to strike a chord with technical professionals.

Objectiva Software was set up to remotely service software-development companies in the U.S., by leveraging technical skills in China. At a time when most Chinese service providers service China-based foreign companies, what differentiates Objectiva is their U.S. presence. The U.S. focus has helped them sculpt an identity that is very distant from the issues associated with many China-based companies — poor language and project-mangement skills, lack of understanding of working with remote teams, and so on.

“From the very beginning, we have been a U.S. based company,” says Douglas Winter, CEO, Objectiva.

Objectiva provides software development to companies in the insurance, telecommunications and manufacturing domains. In 2001, they were contracted by San Diego-based NASDAQ company, Document Sciences, to help re-build their software platform. That engagement has grown over the years, and now Objectiva is very closely involved in the delivery of services surrounding the enterprise-software application products of Document Sciences. Objectiva was acquired by Document Sciences in 2004, and continues to deploy about 50 engineers on the various development activities for them, which include J2EE (Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition) development and maintenance. In fact, J2EE is a key area of focus for Objectiva, and takes up 50% of their total work. About 35% is on .NET application development, while the remaining is focused on mobility platforms.

Among their clients is Nypro, a plastics-solutions company. Objectiva works on their Internet business and back-office applications and also handles some remote IT monitoring. For DriveCam, Objectiva works on software products that work to monitor a vehicle driver’s behavior. For the online betting company, Youbet.com, Objectiva helps in developing products for their online wagering service.

The company operates in the Internet space, where development is 24x7, the pace is real-time, and the latest technologies are deployed. “I was skeptical about outsourcing our development to Objectiva. I wasn’t sure how a remote team would work out for our kind of requirements. It turns out that it works really well,” says Michael Stark, VP, Technology, Youbet.com. “Objectiva really understands their line of business, and knows the high-end software technologies they work with and the parallel software-development process they have to follow for quicker development.”

The key challenge that Objective has ahead of it is being able to maintain this level of quality. The focus on the existing verticals will continue in the coming year. A new delivery center is also being opened in Xi’an, China.

“Our goal is to double our revenue organically every year through our existing and new customers. The challenge is to continue to grow quickly enough to maintain our position as a well-known company in China,” says Winter.
